Is it just me or have their been an inordinate amount of food recalls in recent weeks?

You can find out about recalls yourself by subscribing to the FDA Recall email list (or subscribe in an RSS reader). You’ll also want to subscribe to updates from the USDA, too (they also have an RSS option).

First Class Mail rate going up January 27th

It will be a little more expensive to send First Class Mail starting January 27th.  That’s when the price of a stamp is raised from $.45 to $.46.

Whenever there is a postal increase, I usually take stock of my Forever Stamps and buy more.  The last time I purchased stamps was more than 2 years ago at $.43 each.  That’s the beauty of Forever Stamps–you can buy them and use them anytime in the future, regardless of if there’s another price hike.

The U.S. Postal Service also announced other  changes:

  • Postcards will increase 1 cent to 33 cents.
  • A new First-Class Mail Global Forever Stamp will be introduced.  This stamp can be used to mail letters anywhere in the world for $1.10.
  • Domestic retail pricing for Priority Mail Flat Rate products is increasing.

A full list of the price of stamps can be found on the U.S. Postal Service website.

Do you have Halloween candy coming out your ears?  With so many opportunities to Trick-or-treat, your house may be overflowing like ours.  Did you know that you can get cold hard cash for Halloween candy that your kids collect?  The candy is then sent overseas to our brave men and women in the armed services.

How does the Candy Buy Back work?

  • Participating dentists “buy” back kids’ Halloween candy at a scheduled event
  • “Buy” with cash, coupons, toothbrushes, creative exchanges – They can partner with local businesses to give away coupons for food, services, goods, etc.
  • They can give away the Hygiene Kits, they can set up an Opportunity Prize–each kid gets a ticket per pound of candy for an opportunity drawing to win special prizes, etc.
  • Dentists send the candy to Operation Gratitude or other Military support groups
  • Operation Gratitude sends the candy to U.S. Military deployed in harm’s way

Bzz Agent: Try products for free!

I just got selected for a new campaign for BzzAgent so I thought I’d tell all of you about this great company.

Bzz Agent is a word-of-mouth marketing company.  You sign up, fill out your demographic information, take the occasional survey and if you’re demos match up with a client, you might be invited to join a “campaign”.  Sometimes you get a box with the product, sometimes you just get coupons for a FREE product.  You will always be given informational cards and occasionally coupons or even samples to hand out to friends and family.

All Bzz Agent asks you to do is try the product and tell people about it, good or bad.  Then report back to Bzz.  The more Bzz you create, the higher your ranking which leads to more opportunities to Bzz.  Nice little circle, huh?  And in case you’re wondering, you do not have to be a blogger to participate.

Over the course of the past few years, I’ve gotten into the following Bzz Campaigns:

  • Sonicare Toothbrush
  • Coppertone Kids Sunscreen
  • Take 5 Candy Bars
  • SmartFoods Selects
  • John Grisham’s The Litigators
  • Nerf Firevision Football
  • Alexia Foods (my most recent campaign)
  • Amazon Kindle (yup, you read right!)

I’ve even gotten some Olay anti-aging cream (ahem, not that I need that sort of stuff).  I’ve tried Bug repellents and dish detergent and mascara, too.

MyPoints.com; earn rewards for reading emails, shopping, playing games and more!

Back in 2001, I saw a news report that mentioned a website where you could earn points for gift cards called  My Points. I checked it out and found it was a match made in heaven.  I have earned 566,583 points over that time.  That’s a LOT of gift cards!

There are many ways to earn MyPoints:

  • Reading email.  Most emails will earn you 5 points if you click to visit the website mentioned.
  • Shopping. By starting at the MyPoints site, you can earn between 1 and 20 points per dollar spent depending upon the retailer selected.
  • Playing Games. The site will match your first $20 deposit and you can earn 50 points PLUS 5 points per dollar spent.  Games can be played for as little as FREE (daily Free Play) or 75 cents and not only can you actually win cash, you can earn points with the game website which is run by World Winner.  That’s right–you can earn rewards not only for My Points by playing online games, you can earn rewards for World Winner, too.  It’s legal double dipping!
  • Downloading the Toolbar which will net you 100 points.  You can also activate the Point Finder.  You’ll get a notification on the toolbar if you go to a site where you could be earning MyPoints.
  • Searching the Web can earn you a maximum of 75 points per month
  • Registrations at other partner websites or Subscriptions to things like book clubs
  • Taking surveys or completing short questionnaires
  • Bzz Agent rewards come in the form of My Points
  • and more.

You choose how much communication you want from My Points.  Obviously the more open you are, the more contact you’ll get from them.

There are tons of earning websites out there now and I’ll be honest, I don’t use My Points as much as I used to.  But I still find the Granddaddy of earning websites a valuable resource to earn rewards for things I am already doing (shopping, playing games, etc).  You might want to check it out, too.
