flickr - ibm4381Olbrich Botanical Gardens has launched their Blooming Butterflies annual exhibit. Free-flying butterflies take over the Bolz Conservatory until August 12, 2012.

My kids love watching the butterflies emerge from their chrysalises. It’s a great learning experience for everyone. More than 12 species of butterflies are on exhibit–some are native to Wisconsin and others are typically found in the southern portion of the United States.

You will be amazed at how big some of the butterflies are–these are the ones that without fail will land on my shoulder and creep me out! I love to watch the butterflies–I just don’t want them landing on me!

Olbrich asks that visitors do not touch the butterflies, but if you’re hoping one will land on you–be sure to wear bright colors.

Ticket prices are the following:

  • Ages 13 & up: $5
  • Ages 3 – 12: $3
  • Ages 2 and under: Free
  • Olbrich Botanical Society members: Free

Olbrich and Michael’s Frozen Custard have again teamed up for the butterfly passports this year. Kids can go on a treasure hunt in the outdoor gardens to complete their passport. Follow the butterfly stencils to each stamping station and answer a few questions. Kids who complete their passport will earn a free junior cone from the Michael’s Frozen Custard at 3826 Atwood Avenue location (near Olbrich).

New this year is the “Adopt a Butterfly” program. Your $20 donation will help support the butterfly exhibit and Gardens. You will also receive a “Butterfly Friend Pack” complete with the following:

  • Seeds to grow zinnias that attract butterflies to your own yard
  • Sticky slappy butterfly toys
  • Bumper/window sticker
  • Adoption certificate
  • Letter from Marty the Monarch

The Blooming Butterflies exhibit is open daily from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Head to Olbrich’s website for more info.
